How I tested negative and positive at the same time - Chapter 1

Apr 21, 2021 was a normal fasting day for me (Ramadan Month). And as usual I was not in a mood to start my work day. Finally I pulled myself out of the bed and was preparing to get a shower. At around 11 am Aisha (Wife) asked me to dry the clothes which she had hand washed (Tahir's clothes are usually hand washed). I went out and started to pull out the clothes one by one to dry. In this process of bending up and down I got a slight pain in the left side of my abdomen near the stomach. Initially I thought it might be due to gastroenteritis which usually happens during fasting for me. But this pain was different, it started paining on the back side slowly it increased and I started sweating a lot. After 10 to 15 mins it was unbearable, I even had to break my fast and drink water to see it subsides

By this time Dad, Mom and Aisha got worried since they have never seen me like this before. Seeing me in unbearable pain Dad quickly advised to go to hospital as the situation got worse. But I was hesitant because of this Covid spreading at its peak in Chennai. Also I did not wanted to expose anyone to it because of a simple stomach pain. I had made up my mind and wanted the pain to subside itself and somehow bare it until that. While I was processing all this Dad called our flat's Ground-floor uncle for help. He came and saw me and said the same, let's go to hospital and I kept rejecting as I did not want to risk him too. After a while I lost hope, and finally agreed to their request. The ground-floor uncle then quickly went back to his home, changed clothes and waited patiently for me to change my attire and come down. He then took us (I, Dad) to a nearby hospital, it was already past 12 and the hospital's out patient visiting time was over by then. As the doctor was about to leave, the nurse /receptionist was also not willing to hold the doctor nor say to him about our arrival. The uncle had to plead to the nurse and explained that it's an emergency, she then agreed and went on to get permission from the doctor. The doctor seemed to be an aged and experienced person around 50+. I told him all my symptoms and upon hearing he said all are pointing to Kidney stone scenario and suggested to take a pain killer injection for the pain to subside. Meanwhile he also prescribed for an abdomen scan to see if there are any actual kidney stones present. I took the injection and got the tablets from the pharmacy counter. Since the doc also advised to have more water intake, immediately after coming out of the hospital I had two tender coconuts. The pain subsided a little after that. After all this drama since morning, I was completely exhausted. I wanted to go home quickly and rest for a while.

While I was resting at home, again after approximately 30 mins the pain started in the same way as it started in the morning. This time again we did not wait for it to increase and called the uncle and he was kind enough to go to the hospital again to see if the doctor was still available. Again the same nurse was there. Again he had to explain her the situation and made her call the doctor. The doctor suggested one more injection and asked us to take the scan too if possible over the call. The uncle then came back and took me to the hospital where we got the second injection and the pain subsided completely in 10 mins. From there we went to the scan center to check for kidney stones, they were in the process of closing the center. There again we had to explain the situation and they too were kind enough to reopen the center just for me. The radiologist scanned my abdomen completely with her ultrasound machine. She said there are no abnormalities that she could find and the kidney was also functioning fine. Anyways I was asked to comeback again next morning with full bladder to do a thorough test. We paid the bill and came back home and after that there was no pain so I was relieved as the initial scans too were normal.

The point to be noted here is that I did not take a leak the whole day with all these happening around and within me. After coming from the scan center I slept completely for the rest of the day. After dinner before going to sleep I had to take a leak as a usual routine, I went inside locked the wash room and started to relieve myself, banggg the urine was in dark red color. It was like a brain fade moment, first time seeing this, I thought it was blood, but had not pain / irritation while passing it. I thought for a while and flushed it and after coming out told Aisha about it. It put unnecessary things in my mind for a while and dozed off to sleep as my next scan was scheduled at 7.30 am next morning.

Apr 22, 2021 - I woke up early and with lots of doubts in mind. Since I was able to manage myself and there was no more pain, I went alone to the scan center at 7.30 A.M with a full bladder. The same radiologist scanned again. Again same result. No stones found. After scanning for a while she asked me to relieve myself. I was scared inside as the scenes of previous night flashed in my mind and asked for the washroom directions. With hopes that urine color would have changed in my mind, I started to take a leak and damn again red color. By now I knew that something is messed up inside and hoped that it would turn in the next scan. After coming out I said the same to the radiologist, she said that may be the stone would have passed already and because of that I got the pain. But she gave a clear report that there were no stones found. Since there was nothing in the report I came back home with a sense of relief. While parking my vehicle the Ground floor uncle (to whom I should be very much thankful) asked whether I had showed the report to doctor and he insisted to show it to the doc. So without going to home I took a U turn and went to the same hospital at around 9 am. There was a huge crowd already . But thankfully they had a token system there and my token number was 51. As usual with all the token systems in our society there were people jumping the queue and few needed immediate attention and I too did not mind that. But all the time I was afraid of the crowd because of the Covid and most of the time stood outside waiting for my number. Finally my number came at around 11, I got to show the report and as expected he gave some tablets for 3 days and told nothing to worry. He also suggested to drink lots of water and may be I was too dehydrated and hence the urine color would have changed. Now as the doc advised me to be hydrated while going back I had two tender coconuts this time and went back home, took bath and logged in to work. And the rest of the day went normal. Also the red color in the urine was gone by now.

Since I had visited the hospital for too long I wanted to isolate myself for at least three days. So I slept in the hall. While I was sleeping that night I got chills, the room temperature was 35 degrees and I covered myself with the quilt and slept. May be this was the beginning.

Stay Tuned for the next chapter....
